Invicta Vlogs

Posted on: October 13th 2014

In my teaching of Business Studies and Economics, I have regularly reflected on famous quotes to encourage students to form opinions.

There are two in particular that I have used on many occasions:

“Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.”

― Helen Keller

“Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence wins championships.”

― Michael Jordan

Our Open Evening this week, provided me with an opportunity to reflect on these aspects of my teaching once again.  As we prepared to open our school, it was clear that collectively, we could achieve so much, as Helen Keller, an educator and humanitarian, so rightly quoted.  I naturally prepared a speech to support an account written by two Year 7 students, Anna and Nyah along with our Head Girl, Katie.  However, it was very clear throughout the evening, that it was our emphasis on collaboration that really ‘showcased’ all the great things Invicta achieves.  Such an important aspect of this is the relationships between students. To see Katie working with our Year 7 in the preparation for the evening, was a delight and gave me a real insight into the effectiveness of mentoring and role modelling.  On my own, I could not have relayed what was communicated to our guests, but collectively, their accounts told an honest and perceptive explanation of how much they value their education at Invicta.  This was clearly evident as you walked around the school across all year groups too!

Equally, I was thrilled this week, to hear how teamwork and intelligence, so aptly quoted by Michael Jordan, enabled our Under 16’s to win a Netball match against MGGS, 35 -0, along with our Under 14’s who won 13 – 4. What a fantastic set of results!  I have no doubt that the girls thoroughly enjoyed the success that comes from a solid team performance.  All in all, this week has enabled me to witness and report upon the school’s superb team spirit - something that we value and promote hugely.

However, as I have so often discussed in my teaching, no team is effective without strong relationships and respect for one another.  I know that this week, we will see other great examples of this at our Open Mornings, our Enrichment afternoon and our musical concert on Wednesday – much to look forward to!
