There are only 10 teaching weeks until our Years 11 - 13 students embark upon their formal examinations in May.

s we return back to school from our Half Term holiday, we are reminded of the fact that we only have 10 teaching weeks until our Years 11 – 13 students embark upon their formal examinations in May. We say it so often, but the school year really does fly by!  Personally, I look forward to the fact that we see much lighter mornings and evenings at this time of year, and I count the days until the clocks leap forward in March, but the fact that we are now half way through the academic year, is really quite daunting.  However, rather than looking upon this negatively, I believe that we must be optimistic and resilient in our approach to such challenges.

There are many thoughts on the power of optimism – Optimism spurs positivity. People thrive in positive environments. Happy people are confident people, and confident people make things happen. So alongside the healthy foods, exercise and time spent with family and friends that we have all hopefully had during the Half Term holiday, it is important to add a dose of the all-important optimism to our lives. Not only will it keep our friendships, work and brain happy, but our body too. I am therefore a keen advocate of both optimism and healthy living, along with working hard.  Optimism does take courage and strength – often defying mediocrity and reality, but importantly, it takes vision, perseverance and grit; qualities we hope to develop at Invicta.  These are the hallmarks of the optimist who gets things done!  So, as we embark upon a challenging few months, we will work hard to ensure that our students have the balance of optimism, healthy living and hard work.

We have much to look forward to:  today, we will hear all about the experiences of our staff and students who have been to Iceland on a Geography field trip and New York, on a Dance and Business Studies experience.  I cannot wait to see if our students saw the Northern Lights and to hear all about the sub-zero temperatures experienced by both visits.  But, equally I am eagerly anticipating the delight by both parents and students at the RAG Show tonight.  This is the culmination of lots of hard work from our 6th Form Events Team who organise the show to raise money for charity. It involves students from all year groups and really is a true celebration of talent and optimism!  Similarly, I look forward to seeing the outcomes of our Year 7 students’ enterprise ideas along with seeing the excitement of our German students as they leave for their Exchange to Germany.  I know that they are all keen to see their exchange partners once again. These events are clearly key aspects of our optimism for just this week.  Throughout the next five weeks on our run up to Easter, I know that we have a huge number of events to be optimistic about – next week, we will finalise the offers for new Year 7 for September 2015 and today, Mrs Parish and I will launch our whole school ‘Race for Life’ which will take place at the end of March.  This, along with STEM Week, our Spring Concert which promises to be a great evening with a sixties theme; trips to Cambridge, Snowdonia, Ypres and France; welcoming exchange partners from Japan and Spain and our ‘Spellathon’ and Maths Challenges, we certainly have a busy few weeks ahead with much to look forward to!  Our balance of ‘work’ and ‘play’ will undoubtedly contribute towards our positive outlook to the challenges ahead!
