Invicta Vlogs

Posted on: September 29th 2014

We are constantly told that we live in a world that is forever changing and I am sure that we would all agree with this.

I have always been a firm believer of the quote that ‘the most effective way to cope with change is to help create it’ and in order to do this, we must develop leadership qualities.  As a result, one of my primary aims at Invicta is to ensure that our students have as many opportunities as possible to ‘grow’ as a leader.  This week has been no exception.

On Monday, we were fortunate to witness both strong leadership and talent in the organisation of our Encore Show.  Our senior students did an amazing job of organising such a superb event which raised £555 for charity as well as showcasing some stunning talent in acting, singing, dancing and music.  It was a lovely evening mixed with hope and laugher where we also had Alumni students return to participate and support the evening.  It was great to see our former students and see how well they are doing.

Leadership was also evident in our hosting of a Primary Workshop Day for Mathematics, where 50 students carried out problem solving activities.  Our students and staff modelled qualities of leadership by having the ability to inspire; reinforcing how important it is to have commitment and confidence – key aspects of leadership that underpin all we do.

Our Year 10 Geography Coursework Day highlighted our development of leadership too, whereby they undertook over 12,500 steps in order to complete the day’s task – the need for a positive attitude was undoubtedly required as well as an emphasis on humour. I am sure that our staff need a sense of humour by the end of the day. They now have all the coursework to mark!

One of the highlights this week has to be hosting our Yale and Harvard Information Evening on Wednesday where we had over 250 students and parents listen to an inspiring presentation on the opportunities that an American university experience provides.  The message of the whole evening was ‘if you do not try, you will never know’ and this, along with the amazing opportunities available certainly inspired the whole audience.  I would love to have my time again and explore this idea. I know that a number of students are now determined to aim for this and we will be there to help them realise their dreams.

On Thursday, I was delighted to welcome over 20 of our Year 7 primary school teachers into school to meet some of our Year 7.  We already have the early signs of some superb leaders in Year 7 who were able to show their former teachers around the school without getting lost, along with talking to them about their new friends and school activities.  It was lovely to see the smiles of our students and to hear from their teachers about how they are missed in their primaries.  Meanwhile, some of our Year 10 students attended a TeenTech Conference and won the ‘Best I can Design’ award for the Design an App competition.  Well done girls – I am so proud of you!

To close the week, we had some truly fine examples of leadership – our Mc Millan Coffee Morning on Friday, whereby in excess of £500 was raised and our Leadership Fair at lunchtime further reinforced our emphasis on the value we place on leadership – great examples of communication, delegation, integrity and intuition.  These qualities come in different forms and in varying degrees, but we without doubt witnessed it in our promotion of prefect opportunities in a Fresher Fair and then again, on Saturday where we hosted our Autumn Fair through our parents’ association – FIGS. This was a delightful afternoon whereby friends and family enjoyed the autumn sunshine and witnessed some very enterprising students in the organisation of their stalls, along with some lovely singing, dancing and sporting events.  We are indeed, very lucky to have such great parents and students.

Finally, our Hospitality students, along with Mrs Bennett, Mrs Lloyd, and Mrs Berry hosted a ‘Murder Mystery Evening’ with acting, food and lots of laughter, as well as raising over £500 for charity.  They did a fine job – I have already received e-mails congratulating the students on their warmth, friendliness, professionalism and hard work to make the evening such a success.  I would like to add my thanks and congratulations to them too.

To reflect on this week, I think we can honestly say that our drive for leadership matches the quote: ‘The very essence of leadership is that you have to have vision’ and there is no doubt that we have that at Invicta.  We are certainly preparing our students for the changing world ahead of them and if our girls continue to have fun whilst doing this, then it is certainly a job well done!
