The last week has been surreal, confusing and uncertain for most of us. COVID-19 has certainly created a unique and unprecedented situation which forces everyone to change their lifestyles, habits and plans.
However, in this extraordinary time of difficulties, I have seen the Invicta spirit of teamwork, love and support for one another, and the strong sense of community really shining through. I admire our Year 11 Dance students who worked tirelessly last week to finish their coursework recording. I was impressed with the many students who borrowed all the books they could from the school library, taking them home, ready for home study. I am grateful to all my colleagues who stepped in throughout the week, ensuring that the school stayed fully open until the end of last week.
I empathise with all our Year 11 and 13 students who have had their exams, their end of term celebrations and their everyday routines taken away overnight. In normal circumstances, you must be thinking someone is pulling a practical joke, when they break to you the news of no school until further notice and no exams this summer! I relate to the sense of relief in some of you, but above all, I thoroughly understand the frustration many of you are feeling – you wish to achieve those grades yourselves, rather than having them given to you.
Do not forget that in times of uncertainty, your habits, routines and focus can ground you. Most of you will be working from home as of this week. Try not to let COVID-19 cast a shadow on you and your future. Instead, set yourself a new set of routines and habits which are as close to those of a normal school day as possible: work to your timetable and fill your free time with reading, thinking and creating. It will give you something to hold onto, that is familiar, in a world that is very unfamiliar at the moment. It is essential that our Year 11 and 13 students continue to work on your knowledge and skills and show that you continue to make progress. Your predicted grades do not need to be your mock grades. All the progress that you are making between now and May will be fully recognised and credited by your teachers.
I hope you and your family are staying safe and that you are all being kind, generous and patient.
