South East Themed Book Awards

“Can I really sign this?” is not the natural response you anticipate hearing from an author at a book signing. The book in question was one of the Invicta library copies of Orphan Monster Spy by Matt Killeen presented to him by Elliotte in 8S. I swiftly intervened to ensure that Matt did indeed sign our library copy for us.
This was the start of a fantastic evening at the South East Schools Themed Book Awards on Wednesday 27 March at Kent College Pembury. The students from Years 7, 8 and 9 who attended were treated to an evening of author talks from Sita Bramanchari and Matt Killeen along with a question and answer session where the audience were able to quiz them further about their careers as authors and their inspirations for writing. “Stories come from the palette of the author. I start my books by doodling.” Sita sharing her writing process.
The evening culminated in the big announcement of the winners of the awards. Students from fifteen schools in Kent and Sussex were waiting to hear if their favourite book from both the Teen and the Young Adult list had won. Gabriella in 9N and Claire in 7I were both delighted that their favourites Children of Blood and Bone and Moxie were joint winners of the Young Adult prize and the entire audience were extremely delighted that Orphan Monster Spy was the Teen winner.
I would like to thank not only the girls who attended for their involvement in the awards but also to the students who read their way through the shortlists during Book Group and POP. In addition congratulations to Lexie in 8A whose book review of Moxie was printed in the programme for the event and tweeted on the Book Awards Twitter feed.
