Salters Chemistry Festival
Amber, Suhani, Ria and Jess all took part in the Salters Chemistry Festival at Cambridge University this Tuesday. After a long drive to the get there the girls got straight to work, splitting up into pairs to try to synthesise paracetamol in the department of Chemistry’s teaching labs. This was no small undertaking, as this is usually done by 2nd year undergraduates at the University! Both pairs synthesized their products, and used high tech infrared spectroscopy to test the purity of their product. The day was rounded off with an hour-long demonstration by Dr Peter Wothers MBE, teaching fellow of the department of chemistry at Cambridge. Celebrating the 150th anniversary of the periodic table, Dr Wothers worked his way through the groups, showing reactions such as the hyper-explosive nitrogen triiodide and a 50 litre hydrogen balloon ignited in front of us. A massive well done for the girl’s hard work and engagement during the day!
