Staff Profile - Mr Van der Weide

Name:  Mr Van der Weide

Role:  Teacher

Subject:  Maths

Favourite Book:  Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak.

Favourite Film:  Willow.

Hobbies:  I enjoy watching films. I also love gardening and I grow lots of fruit and vegetables; at the moment I have beetroot, salad, potatoes, carrots and tomatoes. I like swimming and I try and go the pool a couple of times a week. I love Lego and I have a lot of sets particularly Star Wars and Marvel; recently I have been creating my own free builds too which has been good fun.

Favourite Food: I like all kinds of food! Some of my favourites are sushi, Mexican and Italian. I’ve got quite a lot of cookbooks and I enjoy trying out new recipes. As a family, we make lots of things from scratch and try and eat a wide variety of foods.

Favourite Holiday destination: Fiji

If you did not work in a school what job would you like to do?  I would have liked to have gone into the film industry, maybe writing or directing.

What is the most challenging thing you have achieved?  When I was younger, I travelled around the world with my friends on very minimal funds which was an amazing achievement and gave me some of my happiest memories. We visited Australia, Thailand, Malaysia, New Zealand, Tahiti and California. I did bungee jumping and I also did scuba diving off the Great Barrier Reef.

Why did you decide to work in education? Whilst living abroad, I started teaching English as a Foreign Language at a local international school. I really enjoyed it and decided to pursue a career in teaching when I came back to the UK.

How have you found your first term at Invicta?  Hectic but enjoyable!
