Year 10 and 12 Imperial College Visit
On Thursday, 13 June 25 students from Year 10 and Year 12 boarded a coach to Imperial College. Once we arrived, we were introduced to our hosts for the day who explained to us what we would be doing throughout the day. First, we listened to a talk introducing us to the science of epidemiology which is the study of the incidence of disease in a population and how we deal with it.
We were also lucky enough to go on a tour of the South Kensington Campus and see the accommodation which some first year students live as well as the sports centre and a lecture theatre. For me, the most exciting part of the day was when, in two groups, we went to the insectary where mosquitoes were being bred to study malaria. We learnt that only female mosquitoes carry the malaria parasite and we also saw the life cycle of a mosquito. Researchers at Imperial are using this project to find a way to tackle malaria which affects millions of people each year. Finally, we listened to a career talk which gave us all a chance to ask questions and listen to experts talk about our future options, A Level choices and university options.
Thank you to Miss Gorski and Dr Crouch for organising this amazing day for us.
