Bronze DofE Training Day - Saturday, 20 March
Mia in 9S sent this report:
On Saturday morning we all excitedly arrived at school wearing our new walking boots and waterproofs, ready for a fun day of Duke of Edinburgh training. The first part of the day was spent practicing how to set up a tent. We were all very proud when we managed it, even after a few difficulties getting the poles in. Next, we took it down with two people from each group wearing a blindfold and everyone else giving instructions about how to set up the tent without being able to see what they were doing! It was very funny, even though it was quite a challenge. After a snack break, orienteering was next.
With a map of the grounds by SST and the sports hall, we used a compass to get from one point to the next. Even though we knew where we were, we somehow still ended up at the wrong place! Eventually we figured it out and we moved on to grid references. We were told a six-figure grid reference and we had to find it on the map. This skill was familiar to us from geography, so we managed to get every answer right in time for a well-deserved lunch. Seven girls cooking pasta on two Trangias… what could go wrong? Actually, this was fairly straight forward, and we enjoyed some delicious tomato pasta. After washing everything up, we went inside for the first aid session. This was very informative and there’s no doubt about it that everyone had a laugh while singing “Staying Alive” and doing CPR on a mannequin! Thank you to all of the teachers for organising this exciting and educational day. We are all looking forward to completing our expeditions in the summer!
