Teacher Profile - Mrs Rivers
Name: Mrs Rivers
Role: Senior Assistant Head: Careers Adviser
Subject: Careers Education and Guidance
Favourite Book: This is usually the most recent book I have read or else I would not read it! At present, I have recently enjoyed The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman.
Favourite Film: This is tough as I have a bit of an eclectic mix of tastes from classics such as the 1949 Little Women (loved June Allyson as Jo), classic musicals such as ‘Calamity Jane’ with Doris Day but then I also love a good X Men film and loved the original Terminator with Arnie!
Hobbies: I love being active. Running is my favourite hobby but I also enjoy cycling and walking. I have recently increased my open water swimming in the sea and plan to do this throughout winter for the first time which is a challenge I am finding exhilarating!
Favourite Food: I do love a good roast dinner with lots of crispy roast potatoes and a few Yorkshire puddings of course!
Favourite Holiday destination: Cornwall – I have been to other places but always come back to the Cornish coast and feel cheated if I don’t get in an annual visit. We love walking and exploring the Roseland Peninsula or visiting Crackington Haven or Port Isaac in North Cornwall where the waves are bit more challenging! Plus, all this activity means we get to enjoy a nice cream tea or Cornish pasty!
If you had not become a Careers Adviser what job would you like to do? ‘Cracker’ with Robbie Coltrane was a popular TV show in the nineties and for a while I considered becoming a Criminal Psychologist but then realised I didn’t have the stomach for it!
What is the most challenging thing you have achieved? I ran the London Marathon in 2016 which was a huge commitment and challenge but was one of my favourite experiences to date. I have lots of happy memories of the whole day and the support on the streets of London was amazing.
Why did you become a Careers Adviser? I had lots of job interests when I was younger and in my final year at university (yes, I did leave it that late but don’t advise you to!) I stumbled across the careers department and thought to myself that advising others on their career paths might be an interesting choice. I have found my study and work in this field enthralling ever since! During my post graduate studies I loved learning about how we develop our own personal career biographies, what impacts on our decision making and the fact that good careers guidance is not about telling young people what to do but supporting them with the decisions they make as they progress from primary school right through to getting that first job and beyond. I love the buzz of helping our students secure their destinations on A Level results day each year and hearing updates from them after they leave Invicta and move through and develop their own life story.
