Gold DofE Training Day
Mr Eke sent this report:
The day started with the two expedition teams working through a quiz, using tools provided to discover the answers to the questions. At Gold level, the students are encouraged to take ownership of their expedition and their training, with the leaders talking through the parts that require additional explanations. The students learnt how to use a throwline…more than 1m! They also learnt to aim correctly so that the throwline landed close enough to the person needing to catch it. Although it was challenging at first, they were all successfully able to perfect their skills!
Another new skill was learning to use a Trangia with methylated spirits instead of gas. This went very well, despite a light hailstorm during this part of the training. The final task before lunch involved creating a shelter using only a tarpaulin and rope. This means they can look forward to sitting somewhere dry and wind-free when eating their meals on their expeditions during Easter and the Summer.
In the afternoon, the students began route planning for their expedition in Northern Ireland in the summer. They were all extremely motivated with their planning and the more rapids they discovered along their route the more they are looking forward to the trip! Well done to all the students who attended! You are all making really good progress with your Gold Awards and should be very proud of yourself! Not long until the Gold Practice Expedition!
