Computer Science in Action Trip
Alysia in Curie 1 and Francesca in Colvin 1 sent this report:
On Tuesday, 27 November, students from both Year 12 and Year 13 Computer Science classes took a valuable trip to the Emmanuel Centre in London to listen to 5 highly regarded speakers as part of the Education in Action events.
We arrived prompt for the event at 10am, excited for the first talk at 10.45am. The first lecture was presented by Matthew Leeke, who gave an insightful talk on Smart Cities with a personal example from his work at the University of Warwick that had the whole room engaged. Next up was Rebecca Tickle, a post-graduate from the University of Nottingham, who gave an extremely informative speech on Big Data and its value to industry.
After a well-deserved lunch break, we returned for an impressive talk from Jon Macey, introducing students to the programming and maths behind animation. This lecture stood out greatly due to Jon’s presentation of the software that he encouraged us to use along with the fantastic video examples demonstrating his coding. The brilliant Amanda Prorok then took us through her ideas for new algorithms that could solve some of the most pressing problems in transport and logistics by using multi-robot systems. Last but certainly not least was Dave Cliff who followed his mind blowing lecture about the biological future for computer system, with an inspirational speech that pushed the idea that everyone can do computer science, no matter what. Overall, this was a fun, educational and productive trip and we encourage all of those interested in the subject to attend next year!
