Year 6 Transition Workshop - Programming
Maya Oliver and Lavinia Mendis in 9T sent this report:
On Tuesday, 26 November 33, Year 6 students from a variety of schools attended a Computer Science Transition workshop. The workshop included a collection of Christmas themed puzzles put together by the Computer Science Department to challenge them in computational thinking. They also experienced how to program using Python-a programming language commonly used by NASA and our GCSE coursework. This gives the students an opportunity to experience the type of lessons and coursework Computer Science students undertake.
The students worked through a booklet of tasks on various aspects of computational thinking, which varied in difficulty. One of the girls even completed the whole booklet, which surprised us all as it was very challenging. Overall, everyone succeeded in programming solutions to problems using iteration, creating variables and drawing with a turtle, some exercises done in Year 7! Overall, the girls enjoyed the workshop and seemed a lot happier and more confident about the transition to secondary school.
