University of Kent Visit

On Wednesday 9 October 2019, we travelled to the University of Kent in Medway to explore our interests in Sports Science. It made us realise that there are a lot more career paths that we can take with a Sports Science degree than we realised, and it does not have to just be within the sport industry but can be in a clinical environment as well. In the morning, we took part in multiple workshops, consisting of various fitness testing. Our favourite was a test for agility where we had to compete against a partner to “knock out” as many lights as possible, dodging past each other. We also tested our lung flow capacity, ability to multi-task, the amount of force that passed through our feet when we run, as well as strength and power in our arms and legs. Completing these tests and having the expertise of numerous PHD students allowed us to develop our knowledge through asking questions and having the practical opportunity to participate in all the tests. In the afternoon, we split into two groups and had to devise our research project, which we are going to spend the next day at the university carrying out. We decided on investigating whether heat has an impact on performance. This means in our next session, we will be using a heat chamber and having to exercise is 30-degree heat and 75% humidity! Once we have completed our investigation, we will complete statistical analysis on our data and prepare a poster with a summary of our investigation and findings. The final day consists of a presentation evening where we are looking forward to presenting our findings to friends, family and university lecturers.
We all thoroughly enjoyed the day, and are very excited to take part in the remaining days. We were all very happy we chose to go! Many thanks to Miss Abbott for arranging this brilliant opportunity for us.
