Year 9 Geography Pond Dipping
On Monday, 1 July, GCSE Geography Year 9 students went to the Vinters Park Pond to go pond dipping as part of their GCSE and to take advantage of the good weather to do some outdoor learning. Once at the pond, we all had the opportunity to use nets to try and catch some creepy crawlies to examine them in their natural habitats. We found creatures such as leeches, mosquito lava, dragonflies and saw swans and herons too! This linked in to what we have been learning recently in class, about biomes and ecosystems and it was really great to see it first hand and have an example right on our doorstep. We learnt about how humans can have a lasting detrimental impact on fresh water eco systems in the UK because of farming practices leading to fertilisers entering ecosystems, over fishing and polluting our waterways. We are now going back to the classroom to scale this up and look at our impact on biomes such as the Sahara Desert and the Amazon Rainforest.
