Year 5 Cookie Mining Challenge
On Tuesday, 12 March, 20 Year 5 students joined Miss Dixon, Mr Ryder and Mrs Smart for a tasty Geography treat. The students were charged with mining the chocolate out of a cookie without damaging their islands habitat beyond repair!
The students enjoyed naming their island, learning about the endangered species they would potentially be impacting, the economic and environmental positives and negatives of mining around the world. Students weighed up these impacts and looked for the best possible way of reducing their environmental impact when mining their cookies!
The students particularly enjoyed getting their 'mining tools' out to pick the precious materials from the landscape. The challenging part however was putting their landscape back to the way it was before - showing that although there are lots of economic positives to mining - the environmental impacts can be widespread and long lasting. The girls were successful, made lots of profit and walked away with a tasty mining treat for their efforts!
Thank you to Miss Dixon, Mr Ryder and Mrs Smart for running the workshop
