Invicta Spelling Bee

This week, the Reading Room saw a select and courageous band of Year 7s, 8s and 9s gathered, to represent their Houses in the final two rounds of the Invicta Spelling Bee.

The penultimate round involved each team attempting the correct spelling of an increasingly impossible series of seven words.  How about “Pharaoh” for starters, followed by “miscellaneous” with “connoisseur” for dessert?  The top three scoring Houses advanced through to the final where they had to endure the “Eliminator”. Each House had two lives and had to nominate one member of their team for each new challenging word.  It takes some nerve to stand in front of an audience of staff and students and risk failure in order to succeed.

As needs must, however, lives were lost and we were finally left with our surviving champions.

The results were as follows:

Year 9

1st: Pankhurst

2nd: Nightingale

Year 8

Ist: Bronte

2nd: Nightingale

3rd: Austen

Year 7

Joint Ist: Austen

Joint Ist: Bronte

3rd: Nightingale

Congratulations to all those who participated in the Spelling Bee. It was a nerve-wracking (or is that nerve-racking?) experience but one which was truly character building. Thank you also for all those who attended and supported the combatants, especially Molly Reeves who hosted the final round and Grace Carroll who assisted with the judging. We would also like to thank Mr Giles for his enthusiastic performance as Master of Ceremonies.
