Midlands Business Trip

‘On Wednesday, 10 and Thursday, 11 October 2018, myself and a group of other Year 10 students took part in a business trip to the central region of England (the Midlands), in order to see how our business theory in class is used in real life and in several successful businesses. During our trip, we visited many thriving businesses, including the University of Warwick, Cadbury’s World and Alton Towers Resort, where we received specialist talks from the employees explaining how they operate as a business, the methods used by the organisation to pique the consumer’s interest in their product, and how good relationships with customers are maintained. Each organisation briefly mentioned the challenges they were faced with (e.g. the challenge of competitors) and their methods used (e.g. advertisement, promotional deals, specialised services) to try and stay one step ahead of their competitors. Although this business trip was mainly based on educational purposes, there were aspects of fun too! After the specialist talks were finished, we were allowed to purchase and eat as much chocolate we wanted from Cadbury’s World, and go on some rides in Alton Towers (my favourite ride was oblivion even though I found it the scariest of them all!) I really enjoyed the business trip to the Midlands and I would go again if I had the opportunity to do so.’

On Wednesday, 10 October 2018, Invicta Grammar School travelled up to Coventry and visited Warwick University also known as WGM. The university is used for public research and has three main facilities that it researches and teaches. These facilities are Art, Science Technology Engineering, Medicine and Social Sciences. We were taken around and shown pieces of technology the university had created and researched such as race cars, robots, 3D printers and self-driving cars. Their aim as a company and university is to find and develop technology used to improve businesses making them more efficient. At the end of our time at Warwick University, we were given the time to talk to the professionals of different sections of technology and, with their help, design our own invention of technology that a business or individual could use.
Next we made our way to Cadbury’s World where we were told the history of Cadbury’s and how it was discovered as a business. As well as being given lots of free chocolate, we were given time to spend our money in the gift shop! Lastly, we were given a talk about the business side of Cadbury’s and about the takeover from Kraft and also about the merger with Schweppes that happened in 1969.
Before going to our hotel for the night, we walked to a local Pizza Express where we enjoyed pizza and pasta dishes.
On our second and final day, we made our way to Alton Towers, where we had a talk with the entertainments manager about the other things Merlin and Alton Towers offers customers and other businesses. After this we enjoyed over two hours in the park where we were free to go on all of the exhilarating rides, including their new ride ‘Wicker Man’ and the ‘Smiler’.
Overall it was an incredibly informing and exciting trip that I would recommend to all business students in the future.
