Orlando Trip
Miss Puttock sent this report:
On Saturday, 12 October, 58 students and 6 teachers embarked on an exciting science trip to Orlando. A 5am start meant that students and teachers alike were exhausted by the time they reached their destination. As part of the trip, students had the opportunity to participate in 2 different science workshops. The first was at EPCOT where they went behind the scenes of “Living with the Land”. They were taught how Disney grow their own food including Mickey shaped cucumbers and pumpkins for their many restaurants. EPCOT relies upon a system called Hydroponics, with students having the opportunity to set up their own mini versions as part of the workshop.
The second science workshop was at Universal Studios Islands of Adventures and focused on paleobotany – the study of plants from the Jurassic Period. They took part in a hands on workshop exploring the plant life which brings the Jurassic Park “land” to life. Students also had loads of fun exploring the many theme park rides across 2 days at Disney and 2 days at Universal Studios.
As part of the trip we also had the opportunity to visit NASA. A site tour of the Kennedy Space Center allowed students to see the launch sites of past and future space crafts, including the new sites recently adopted by Space X. They also had the opportunity to view the real life space shuttle Discovery. It really was an incredible sight to see something which has been launched into space and returned… multiple times!! The students had a fantastic time but were exhausted by the time we returned a week later. An amazing trip, with incredible memories!
