Invicta Grammar School's Big Band is a full jazz orchestra consisting of 25 musicians: trumpets, trombones, saxophones, horns, piano, guitar, bass and drums, and sometimes a singer too. The ensemble plays challenging and fun music from jazz, swing, funk and Latin repertoire, and the musicians develop their skills in both reading and improvising by learning two to three pieces per term. Each term there are opportunities to play solos for those who would like to.
The Big Band rehearses every Friday morning from 8.30-9.00 in H9, lead by our expert musician in residence Miss Lim, and performs at the school's termly concerts as well as at one-off events such as school open evenings.
Musicians from around grade 3 standard up to grade 8+ make up the fantastic sound of the band, and joining the band is by invitation depending on the spaces available. There is currently space for a trombonist and a baritone saxophonist (instrument can be borrowed from school) to join the band. Other musicians who would like to get involved are welcome to make themselves known to Miss Lim or Mr Heaton so that they can be kept in mind for when an opportunity arises.
