Space Workshops at Invicta
Mrs Hambley, Lead Teacher of Art sent us this report from the Art Workshop:
On Monday 26 June 20 Art students from Year 9, Year 10 and Year 12 were involved in an exciting Art workshop in conjunction with the Maidstone International Arts Festival (MIAF). The overall theme for the Arts festival was Mars. Working with Dr Jancy McPhee from NASA and the international artist Hellen Schell, the Art students produced large scale collaborative floor canvases to recreate and suggest the surface of the planet. The students explored and experimented with a range of materials such as pure colour pigment, gold leaf and metallic foils as well as embedding the chemical compounds found on the surface of Mars into the artwork itself. The students worked extremely hard and with great skill to ensure that the canvas outcomes were successful and very beautiful. The Arts festival organisers were so impressed that they will be exhibited as part of the Maidstone International Arts Festival and may also be displayed at the Royal Astronomical Society in Piccadilly, London. Very well done to all involved!
Dr Millgate sent us this report from the STEM Workshop:
14 STEM students from Years 9, 10 and 12 joined 20 Art students for a workshop in conjunction with the Maidstone International Arts Festival. Following an inspiring talk from Dr Jancy McPhee from NASA, the STEM students designed a potential vehicle of the future for travelling on the surface of Mars. The students considered a range of factors, including the terrain, atmosphere and radiation, as well as factors needed to sustain human life. The students worked collaboratively to come up with four different designs ranging from spherical vehicles, to vehicles with a drill to allow it to burrow through the ground. The students were able to look and touch a real Russian space suit, which helped them consider how the astronauts would use the vehicle and also the materials they could use. The students worked extremely well and enjoyed themselves, well done to all involved.
Thank you to everyone involved in the organisation of these workshops, including Mrs Hamley, Dr Millgate, Mrs Brewster, Mrs McRae and Ken Scott from Maidstone International Arts Festival. We were delighted that Valley Park students also took part in event.
