Visit to Auschwitz with Holocaust Educational Trust
On 3 November 2016, Hollie Tomlinson and Festina George-Sawyer from Year 12 visited Auschwitz in Poland for the day. They sent us this report:
“We were lucky enough to be granted the opportunity as part of our Philosophy and Ethics studies. We travelled with the Holocaust Educational Trust as part of their Lessons from Auschwitz (LFA) project. On 31 October we both travelled to London for an Orientation Seminar to learn about what we would experience on the day, and to prepare for it. We then travelled to Krakow in Poland.
First, we visited a Jewish Cemetery in OÅwiÄcim. This was an interesting experience as we got to witness the graves of some of those who were murdered in Auschwitz-Birkenau. There were special tributes also to those who helped to save lots of Jews during this time.
Next we travelled to Auschwitz. This was a concentration camp during the time of the Nazi Persecution. We were given a tour and shown around the museum. This was a very moving experience. We witnessed personal belongings and pictures of those involved in the Holocaust. This part was very memorable as it helped to re-humanise statistics we were aware of around the Holocaust. It helped us to re-individuate those who lost their lives in this tragic time.
Lastly we travelled to Birkenau. Although people did hard labour there, ultimately the main use of this was a death camp. It contained many gas chambers and crematoriums that were destroyed before the camp was liberated. Visiting here helped us to connect with the victims of the Holocaust further, and find out more about the perpetrators themselves.
This was both an extremely moving yet rewarding experience for us. We hope to pass on our knowledge and understanding of the Holocaust, its victims and perpetrators as part of our Next Steps Project. We plan to lead assemblies and create resources to play our part in assuring the Holocaust is never forgotten. We would like to thank our lead teacher Miss Cavender and the Holocaust Educational Trust for this life-changing opportunity.”
