A Level students visit The Palace of Westminster
On Thursday, 27 February a group of twenty AS Government and Politics students visited the Houses of Parliament as part of their A level studies. After a tour of the Palace of Westminster, students had the opportunity to listen to a live debate on the government's welfare reform bill, in the House of Commons. They also listed attentively to a debate in the House of Lords on the UK's response to the escalating humanitarian crisis in Syria. After continuing the tour through the rest of the public spaces, the group took part in workshop on how laws are made. Students were divided into teams and carried out a mock debate on a proposed law concerning the re-introduction of the death penalty. Students were guided through the various stages of passing a new law. Sadly they didn't spot Angela Merkel, the German Chancellor, who was in parliament on the same day addressing a special session of both houses.
