Year 5 Geography Workshop
Miss Dixon sent this report:
On Tuesday, 10 March 16 Year 5 students attended a Geography workshop to mine for some sweet treats!
Students were taught about the positive and negative socio-economic and environmental impacts of mining and given a map of a fictional island. The girls learnt about endangered species and who would be impacted on the island too! Students were given a set of “mining tools” and were tasked with extracting the chocolate from cookies without damaging the structure of the cookie too much. A challenge almost as hard as not eating the cookies straight away! Students were “paid” for extracting the chocolate however incurred fines if irreplaceable damage was made to the cookie; some were very skilled at being “toothpick” miners. This process highlighted that although there are economic benefits linked to mining these may be outweighed by the environmental impacts. All the students enjoyed the activity, worked well together and took home a chocolate cookie (or two!) for their hard work. Thank you to Mrs Smart, Mr Ryder and Mr Ryan for running the activity.
