Royal Holloway University Visit
On Thursday, 29 November a group of Year 12 English, students were given the opportunity to visit Royal Holloway University to experience University life first hand and to participate in their ‘‘Exploring the World of Texts - Literature Study Day’.
The day was focused around their Comparative Literature and Culture degree course and we began the day with some poetry comparison, giving us a taste as to what it is like to study the course. We compiled ideas in a large-scale discussion involving other schools and the professors and were given tips on how to approach unseen poetry. Following that, we attended a lecture on ‘The Art of Close Reading’ and then got the chance to try it for ourselves. Then the room was divided into two separate workshops: ‘Reading pictures and viewing words: an Introduction to Text-Image Relations’ and ‘Blood Relations: A Spanish Vampire Story’s Adaptation of the English Paradigm’. These allowed us to explore areas of study not included in the A-Level syllabus. After a short lunch break and tour of the campus, we finished the day with tips for our UCAS applications and a Q&A with some student ambassadors.
Overall the day was extremely helpful with regards to developing the skills needed for successful analysis of any text, especially unseen poetry, and introducing all students to different cultures in literature and the extent to which they differ from one another.
