Kew Gardens
On Monday, 19 November, 43 Year 10 and 11 students had the opportunity to visit Kew Gardens. The visit was accompanied by Miss Puttock, Mrs Bailey and Mrs Mason. The purpose of the Biology trip was to link with the B4 topic on Photosynthesis. The students all had the chance to take part in a workshop led by a member of Kew Garden’s staff. The workshop assessed their prior understanding of the photosynthesis equation, the role of stomata and the factors, which might affect the rate of photosynthesis. They also had the opportunity to investigate how plants are adapted in three different “biomes”. These included desert, rainforest, aquatic and alpine environments. The students were very engaged and enjoyed the array of plant species that they were able to see. Many students also enjoyed seeing the small number of animals that Kew had to offer – a particular favourite was George the Iguana! Following the workshops, the students had the opportunity the other aspects of Kew Gardens including the Treetop walkway, Palm House, Temperate House and The Hive.
