As we embark upon a New Year and a new term, we cannot avoid the fact that it is New Year’s Resolution time.
As we embark upon a New Year and a new term, we cannot avoid the fact that it is New Year’s Resolution time. So often, we are asked ‘what is your resolution?’ or ‘have you kept to your resolution?’ and the answer is ‘no’! I advocate the need to write things down as this ultimately will make it ‘stick’ far more. If you let other people know too, then you are certainly more likely to keep to it. In a similar way, we are always encouraged to make a list of goals or ‘things to do’. There is no doubt that writing things down can help us make sense of the ideas we have, the suggestions we receive and the progress we are making. Even more so, is the fact that by writing them down, we cannot forget them! I am a big ‘list person’. My lists give me direction and a sense of achievement. However, I can certainly say that as a teacher, our lists constantly have something added to them. But, as I prepare my list of for the next term, I can look forward to a term whereby I know that students, staff and parents will be thinking positively about what is ahead of them. Not only have we students visiting Geneva, Paris, Berlin, and Italy this term, but we also have students participating in debating competitions, challenges in literacy, Mathematics and Memory, World Challenge fund raising and an important netball tournament to name but a few! This is without internal examinations for Years 9, 10 and 12. So, I do think that a few lists are in order!
However, I do want to advocate the need to ‘think bigger’ than just a year’s resolution. There is nothing wrong at this point in setting long term goals. Resolutions, in my opinion, should not just have short-term endpoints. I always like to encourage our students and staff to be ambitious and think longer term – just as long as you have shorter goals in between. On a similar basis, it is really important to include personal goals in your lists. I believe that there is no real separation between work and life; it’s all just living! So, whatever your New Year’s Resolution is, enjoy the challenge. How are you going to achieve it? By making a list of course and ticking it off one by one as you go along! I look forward to sharing our challenges as the year goes on and to certainly celebrating the achievements too!
