Invicta Vlogs

Posted on: December 15th 2014

As we open Christmas cards at this time of year, you cannot fail to ignore fact that we are reminded to celebrate.

Indeed, for this week, it has certainly been the case – both in the news and at Invicta.

I was personally touched that the Nobel Peace Prize 2014 was awarded jointly to Kailash Satyarthi and Malala Yousafzai "for their struggle against the suppression of children and young people and for the right of all children to education.”  This accolade is a superb way of recognising the brave acts of Malala.   Despite her youth, Malala has already fought for several years for the right of girls to education, and has shown by example that children and young people, too, can contribute to improving their own situations. This she has done under the most dangerous circumstances. Through her heroic struggle she has become a leading spokesperson for girls' rights to education.  This should certainly be celebrated by such an award.

Celebrations, not in quite the same vein, have been at the heart of a great deal of activity this week.  Our RAG (Raise and Give) Dance Show celebrated the superb work of so many of our students along with the great works of famous movies and composers. It was a truly wonderful evening and a delight to see our students work together to produce their own show to raise a wonderful sum of £833 for our RAG charities. This, along with the fact that every day, we have celebrated RAG with a variety of activities including Battle of the Bands, Stars in Your Eyes and a whole host of Fancy Dress themes, reminds us of the importance of having fun in order to ‘honour’ an important event.  To raise £5,052.72 as a total for RAG is simply amazing and testament to the fact that celebrations can be modern, fun, meaningful and worthy.

Similarly, our Christmas celebrations, which started with a Carol Concert at Maidstone Museum and then again at All Saints, remind us that the celebrations are undoubtedly traditional, but equally a way to bring people, very simply, together.  To see our choir, orchestra, students, family and friends of Invicta all together to celebrate the festivities was an occasion of happiness and warmth.  I am extremely proud that we can combine both tradition and contemporary celebrations and at the same time, remind ourselves of the importance of such festivities.

It is on this note that I look forward to the fact, that this week, we will be celebrating the hard work of all our students who sat examinations this year at our Annual Prize Giving and Award Ceremony today.  To welcome back our cohort of 2014 examination students to receive their prizes is a lovely event and a great way to bring the end of term to a close.  I really am looking forward to celebrating our students’ achievements and to hearing about their first few months at university, work or travel.  Then, to complete the week with our school celebrations of Christmas, with lunch and our Christmas assembly, will be a fitting end of what has been a busy term – another great reason to celebrate!
