Maddison’s Digital Leader Blog – Do you have an opinion?
In my blog entry, I would like to discuss how technology will shape our careers in the future. Computers and technology are rapidly, in terms of processing, catching up with us and sometimes over taking us. Considering driverless cars - computers controlling these, could be more efficient and safer than a human carrying out the tasks. These new developments could alter our lives, having us depending on computers more and more. We have recently had an assembly showing us driverless cars, and I have thought about the fact that humans will not need to depend on their own senses or actions anymore. Computers and technology will be the thing we depend on.
Driverless cars could mean thousands of taxi drivers would be jobless. However, thousands more humans, worldwide, could live (reduced risk of a crash) due to the technology moving us around and not our human minds making mistakes (human error could be a thing of the past!).
We need to learn about these things, because jobs that do not yet even exist will be available to us, so we must familiarise ourselves with the growing technology.
I have considered some of the jobs people expect technology will never be able to remove. The Creative Arts is possibly irreplaceable because of human creativity and imagination. Could you imagine a robot dancing in ballet more gracefully and creatively than a human? I can’t!
Human Psychology could never be replaced, due to humans having the ability to show compassion and listen to what the person has to say. They also need to try to understand how they are dealing with the situation and feeling about it. A computer presently does not have this ability. Would the development of Artificial Intelligence ever enable it to be able to do this?
Teaching subjects like Music and Drama are another area to consider. Computers could be able to teach the objective subjects like Maths, or at least the rules of these subjects. However, would they ever be able to assess creative subjects? A machine coming up with ideas by themselves is highly unlikely.
These jobs give us some idea of what computers, at the moment, may be thought of, as never being able to achieve. Unless there are huge developments in Artificial Intelligence being made, concepts such as compassion, imagination and being able to think for themselves, are currently beyond the scope of a comptuer.
This ties in with my life at present, as I am making my GCSE option choices. When I am older and looking for a job, there will be so many more jobs that have not had a need to be created. When choosing subjects to study, I think that this is also why we need to keep our options open and not be set on a specific career path too soon. These career paths will most likely change, when new opportunities arise and we need to focus on being able to solve problems; thereby developing transferrable skills.
We have some idea of what jobs could be coming soon. One is a “Drone Manager”, where and when drones become useful tools for transportation or other uses. You will have to direct use of these drones, adhering to agreed and approved legislation. You will also need to organise your fleet of drones and most likely manage others’ pilots in a managed team.
When self-driving cars become common place, someone has to be able to mend these cars. This is where the job of a ‘self- driving’ car mechanic comes into reality. The cars will not be self-fixing, so someone will need to be able to mend them to a high standard and effectively. This role is likely to be highly skilled, as software may be an issue, rather than just mechanical parts.
In conclusion, many jobs and ‘doors’ will be opened for our generation; most of us will be doing jobs, no one has even thought of yet. This is daunting, as we do not know what qualifications are needed and how far away this is. Technology development could cause jobs like taxi drivers to become a thing of the past, but it will open up a lot more jobs as well. We should embrace the change and look forward to the exciting and changing world in which we will be living.
