Japanese Exchange - Caligraphy and The Japan Open Air Museum
Matlida Head sent us this report:
"Today was a very busy day, as we spent the morning at Kanto International School and the afternoon at the Japan Open Air Museum, which let us experience life during the 17th to 19th Century in Japan.
When we arrived at Kanto, our first lesson was Japanese! It started with tongue twisters! This had a pretty hilarious outcome, with the whole class attempting, migime, migimimi, migimimi, migime! We then went on to Japanese introductions, Watashi wa Igirisu kara kimashita (I am from England). A calligraphy lesson followed and once we had got over the initial fear of getting the ink on our clothes, it was very enjoyable to learn such a beautiful skill! Mrs Brewster and Miss Laming’s creation was deemed ‘the most sophisticated,’ and thoroughly impressed the teacher. The last lesson was origami, which earned a collective cheer from all of us! We were handed out instructions and paper to make a goldfish, angelfish and a “tricky” boat, which was very tricky! After lunch, with our hosts we headed out to the train station.
Nihon Minkaen Open-Air Folk Museum in Kawasaki contains a collection of 25 old Japanese folk houses such as farms and merchant houses. This was a spectacular opportunity to immerse ourselves in Japanese culture as we walked around the various buildings, which had been lived and worked in by Japanese people hundreds of years ago. We learnt a lot about the Japanese architecture during this period, which was very interesting for the budding designers in the group! The Kabuki Theatre was of particular interest to the Drama students in the group, who thoroughly enjoyed seeing the intricate design of the theatre as well as learning how they would get the stage to turn during performances. After leaving the museum we made our way back to the train station and met our partners in front of the flower shop in Shinjuku Station, now our designated meeting spot!
We greeted our partners and said goodbye to each other as we looked forward to the weekend with our partners with planned activities involving visits to Tokyo Sky Tree, Onsen (Spa) and Disney Sea!"
