Year 5 Familiarisation Workshop- Biology
On Saturday, 16 April 2016, 31 intrepid Year 5 students took part in a fantastic Biology Workshop on 'The Power of Respiration'. Students were immediately treated to a custard powder explosion showing them the energy that can be released from sugar. The young scientists then carried out two experiments; one investigating whose yeast samples would release the most gas and inflate a balloon the most, the second was a 'respirometer race' to look at what organisms took in oxygen the quickest. Plastic beads were beaten by woodlice who were unexpectedly pipped at the post by some peas! Students investigated the gases they create and exhale using various indicators and compared exercise with limited blood supply. All this in two hours!
Students left excited for the weekend and had exhibited knowledge and understanding of GCSE level Biology by the time they had left the school.
Our thanks go to to Miss Puttock, Mrs Mason and Mr Fulford for their help running the session.
