STEM at Discovery Park
On Friday, 18 March 2016, 8 students from Years 7 and 8 visited the Bing Bang event at Discover Park, Sandwich. The event started, as its name suggests, with big bangs as Dr Hal, from Brighton University, created glowing chemicals, ice cream using liquid nitrogen and ear splitting bangs from exploding balloons. The second part of the event involved a more hands on approach with the students having to create a “rollercoaster” for a bouncy ball using only newspaper and sticky tape. The final activity involved investigating the impact of temperature on moth larvae. This activity brought out the squeamish side in some who did not like the feeling of the larvae crawling on their hands! Overall a thoroughly enjoyable trip was had by all, with lots of interesting ideas of where STEM can be found.
Thank you to Ms Laxton for organising the trip and to Mrs Woolley and Mr Millgate who accompanied the students.
