Year 5 Science Workshop - The Power of Fuels
On Saturday, 5 March 2016, 30 inquisitive Year 5 students visited Invicta Grammar School to investigate the power of fuels, as part of a Year 5 Familiarisation Workshop. The session literally started with a bang, as students saw flames rise up from a mixture of water, washing up liquid and methane! Students investigated which food products released the most energy by measuring how much heat was given off when burnt. The second part of the workshop looked at Bloodhound, the world’s fastest car. Students watched a demonstration involving a ‘Whoosh Bottle’, whereby alcohol fuel is burnt in a plastic cylinder to release a small explosion. In the final activity, students investigated which of three fuels was the most powerful. This challenged the students with some GCSE equations to solve the investigation. Our visitors left very excited and are looking forward to the final Science Workshop which will be based on Biology next term.
Thank you to Mr Fulford and his team for delivering such an informative and exciting workshop for our guests and for giving up their Saturday morning.
