Business Studies Visit to The Midlands
On Thursday, 3 March 2016, the Business Studies Department took 35 students on a mini tour of manufacturers in the Midlands, to gain a deeper understanding of topics learnt at GCSE. After an early morning departure, the first stop of the day was Denby Pottery in Derby. Here, the students were given a short presentation on the background of Denby before being whisked off on a tour of the factory. Students got to see the manufacturing process from start to finish and were then given the opportunity to make their own Denby clay frog, as well as paint their own design onto a plate – a perfect gift for Mother’s Day! An over-night stay was enjoyed by all at the Jurys Inn Hotel, where students were left feeling refreshed and ready for day two.
The second day began with a visit to the JCB Headquarters where students were welcomed with refreshments before viewing a short presentation in the JCB Theatre about the company. Afterwards, students were taken on a tour through the ‘Story of JCB’ exhibition and around the factory. Students were able to see the assembly line of the world famous Backhoe Loader machine – from the delivery of the sheet steel, profiling, laser cutting, welding, paint shop and assembly, right up to the finished product. The students were left amazed by how much work goes into building just one machine! The final part of the day took students to Cadbury World, where fun (along with free Cadbury chocolate!) was had by all. Students toured Cadbury World, learning about the history of the company and the manufacturing process as they went along. The experience then ended with a 4D cinema experience, where everyone screamed their way through a virtual rollercoaster ride.
Overall, a thoroughly enjoyable trip was had by all, and which will now form the basis of many a future lesson to give context to the theory being covered.
Thank you to Mrs Marshall, Ms Poulter, Miss Palmer and Ms Bentley who accompanied the students on this visit.
