Maths Inspiration Lecture
Invicta students studying Further Mathematics at A level, attended a Maths Inspiration Lecture at the Marlow Theatre, Canterbury on Wednesday, 26 March.
They were entertained by the well-known author and broadcaster Simon Singh, who spoke about the hidden maths in episodes of the Simpsons. Oxford mathematician David Acheson showed students how pizzas can be used to demonstrate mathematical proofs and Colin Wright from Keele University who discussed the maths inherent in juggling. All three lectures touched on many of the topics that would be studied in a mathematics degree at university. This was followed by a lively question and answer session with the speakers. The finale was an excellent show of juggling to an electric guitar solo which allowed the students to appreciate that mathematicians can use their skills to excel in other activities. Thank you to Mrs Stoneham for organising the visit.
