Oxford University English Faculty Open Day
On a sunny Saturday at the beginning of March, three gifted English students accompanied Ms Walters on a trip to Oxford to take part in the Oxford University English Faculty Open Day. The group were welcomed by the Head of Faculty, who gave a valuable insight into the prestigious tutorial system and the students’ ability to determine the course of their own studies. The students were provoked into discussion by a lecture on ‘The book in early modern England’ and were charmed by Oxford students, who led us through the colleges of Jesus, Brasenose and Exeter, all vying to convince us that their college really was the best possible place to pursue the study of literature. The day closed with an extremely engaging ‘performance’ of an entrance interview by one of the current students and his tutor. There was also some very useful advice about the best way to secure one of the elusive English Oxford places through application, the EALT and interview. All the girls left Oxford feeling inspired and encouraged that their hard work in their English courses were giving them the best possible basis for an application. The day was thoroughly enjoyed by all.
