RAG - Soccer Aid
Team captain, Ashwin in Roddick 2, sent this report about Soccer Aid:
Participating in Soccer Aid was a joyful experience. The amazing videos created by the senior prefects to promote the event generated a lot of excitement in the air, and it led to a great start for RAG week. Being team captain of the student team was very fun. Working with everyone, through undertaking practice sessions for the upcoming match, helped us improve our skills and teamwork.
The walk out to the 3G pitch was nerve-wracking but simultaneously very exciting. It was amazing to hear the audience being very thrilled to watch the match. As the goalkeeper for the first half of the game, I felt some pressure as I did not want to lose against the staff team. But I also knew that ultimately, we were able to raise a lot of money for charity, and this allowed me to have a lot of fun as well.
Singing the national anthem, taking the knee, shaking Mr Lillicrap’s (who was team captain for the staff team) hand to build suspense made me fully realise the amount of hard work put into this event. I am so thankful for everyone who helped organise the event and made it a wonderful experience for the audience and players.
Overall, the first half of the match consisted of the student team taking a convincing lead. It was 4-0 for our team, which created a lot of tension. This was because everyone was wondering if the staff team would be able to make a fierce comeback and even the score. There were many close calls and I had to concentrate to make sure no shots would pass me. The first minute of the game frightened me as the staff advanced to our side and nearly scored twice. I was thankful for being able to luckily save both attempts.
For the second half I cheered for both teams, fully enjoying the match as I was able to freely watch the rest of the game. There were many surprises and amazing moments, such as Mr North’s terrific goal and equally terrific celebration which increased the energy of the crowd. The excitement as the staff team scored more goals and nearly evened out the score made the whole match much more special.
Once the one hour match came to an end, we shook the hands of the staff team. This was very fulfilling because although there was some competitiveness, we all had a good time and raised a lot of money for charity. The players, organisers and the great audience, who provided so much support, helped us create a great event which started RAG week very well.
