Teacher Profile - Mrs Howard
Name: Mrs Howard
Role: Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) Teacher
Subject: Spanish and French
Favourite Book: This is a difficult one, so I am going to choose three categories! Firstly, a Spanish one: The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafón. Next, a book I have read recently which was recommended by a friend and I enjoyed it so much: A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles. It is just so beautifully written and a great story; I could not put it down. Finally, a classic: A Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde. The moral in this story about the perils of placing too much importance on physical appearance and neglecting kindness is entirely relevant today.
Favourite Film: Chocolat. This is such an atmospheric film, made all the better by being set in some beautiful French villages.
Hobbies: Before the pandemic, when it was possible to be in a crowd with thousands of people, I loved going to concerts and to music festivals in my camper van with my family. We have even been asked by several festivals to write reviews on what it is like to go along as a family, with young children. I also love swimming and I have really missed this during lockdown as well!
Favourite Food: I love all kind of Spanish tapas, especially “boquerones en vinagre” which are anchovies in vinegar and olive oil.
Favourite Holiday destination: Anywhere in Andalucía in Spain. I lived in Grandada during my year abroad at University and I have since been lucky enough to go back many times during holidays and on school trips. I also love Seville and Córdoba; the atmosphere, the food, the architecture, the people and above all the “baños árabes” - the arab baths!
If you had not become a teacher what job would you like to do? I would have loved to have been a doctor or a nurse. I do not mind dealing with injuries and cuts and bruises, but I am sure there is so much more to the job than this, so it is best I leave it to the experts!
What is the most challenging thing you have achieved? Surviving the first few months with my twins when they were babies!
Why did you become a teacher? I wanted languages to be central to my career and I also wanted a job which would be varied and rewarding. Teaching has all of this!
How have you found your first term at Invicta? Everyone at Invicta, staff, and students alike, have been so welcoming. It is such a friendly school with a tangible sense of purpose. It certainly has been a busy first few months and I have spent a good deal of time getting lost around the one-way systems!
