Teacher Profile - Mrs Harrington
Name: Mrs Harrington
Role: Deputy Head of Upper School
Subject: English and Film Studies
Favourite Book: Only one!? This is too hard – as a teenager I was completely in love with Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights and Frankenstein which I am still really nostalgic about; now I am a sucker for anything set in gritty Victorian London. My favourite authors are Angela Carter and Sarah Waters. This year, one book that has had a lasting impression on me is Grayson Perry’s The Descent of Man, which explores masculinity as a social construct and the dangers of it.
Favourite Film: Oh dear…I am not going to be an any more decisive here. Not such a fan of Disney (sorry Miss Woodford!) or rom-coms – give me a horror any day! Aside from horror for entertainment, my favourite directors are Tarantino and Del Toro. If I had to limit my favourites overall to two films – I would go for Natural Born Killers and Requiem for a Dream. Both pretty experimental and suitable for Sixth Formers if you are interested?
Hobbies: Researching – details for someone’s wedding, new dining chairs, the next film to watch - I love it all. Country walks, reading, being a crazy cat lady and swimming lessons with my son.
Favourite Food: Any authentic dishes around the world as I am a massive food lover and love to try local delicacies. Unfortunately, I cannot handle spicy food which I blame my parents for, growing up with stereotypical Northern Irish dinners which involved potatoes with every meal!
Favourite Holiday Destination: So far, Croatia. The perfect mix of natural beauty, culture to explore, amazing local food…and a great Game of Thrones tour.
If you had not become a teacher what job would you like to do? I would love to be an interior designer or wedding planner…so much research and planning…mmm…
What is the most challenging thing you have achieved? This would probably be going on a World Challenge expedition to Madagascar. A month sleeping in a tent, no toilets or showers and witnessing a level of poverty I had not expected during our placement at a remote village where we built a primary school for the local community.
Why did you become a teacher? The students made me want to be a teacher and are the reason I will never leave the profession. The relationships you build with them, seeing them grow into independent confident young adults ready to take on the world when they leave and being there to help them when times are hard. There is nothing more rewarding!
