#WomeninScienceDay
Mrs McGivern sent this report:
This week the world may be celebrating #WomeninScience Day, but that is something that we celebrate every week at Invicta!
We are very proud of our Science Curriculum, and the STEM opportunities across the school, both in lessons and as part of our wider participation programme.
In addition to our extensive theoretical schemes of work, our students complete a remarkable amount of practical work during their time at Invicta. This is true right across the school; from the very first ‘Introduction to Science’ topic in Year 7 to exceeding expectations with a huge range of complex practical activities across the three A Level sciences. We are proud of our the ‘required practical’ style activities and assessments that we have introduced to the KS3 course this year, and the way that we will be able to map development of practical skills, as well as knowledge from Year 7 to 13.
Beyond the classroom, students at Invicta have opportunities to expand their understanding of practical science as part of our annual Science Week (6 – 15 March 2020), the Science Fair (10 March 2020), and our Eureka Science Club open to KS3 students on Wednesdays from 3.30 – 4.30pm. Additionally, our students have access to a wide range of external activities, with visits from Cern in Switzerland, to the International Space Centre in Florida, via the Salters Chemistry Festival at the University of Kent, visits to Cambridge University, Kew Garden and many more!
Through Dr Crouch, our Director of Science, we have close links with our VIAT Primary Schools. This means that we are also able to support the science education opportunities for our younger students across the Trust, inviting them to Invicta for various Transition events. Invicta Science Staff also visit the VIAT Primary Schools to run Science Enhancement Sessions.
As a department, we are excited for the opening of the VIAT School of Science and Technology Maidstone, the newest addition to the Valley Invicta Campus. This amazing facility will allow us to expand our science provision in the local area, both for new students and those already studying across Valley Park, Invicta Grammar School and our Primary Schools.
We encourage you to get involved with this year’s STEM events, Science visits, Eureka Science Club, the upcoming Science Week Poster competition (see overleaf) and to ask your science teachers about any other opportunities you may have missed!“
