Year 5 Filmmaking Workshop
This weekend, Year 5 took part in a Filmmaking workshop. This began with learning a variety of camera angles used by industry professionals within the Film and Television sector, and analysing how they can be used to influence how a character is represented and influencing how an audience may respond to them. Students then explored different film genres and how conventions (or common features) are used to clearly identify their product and help tailor it towards their target audience.
Once equipped with the skills of how and why filmmakers make their own work, it was time for our budding directors and actresses to make their own! Our concept was ‘I swear I’m innocent!’. We quickly agreed that we wanted this to be primarily a detective drama with a narrative twist at the end. Our class split into three and recorded the beginning, middle and end of their short film and set to work! We had arrests, red-herrings, cross-interrogations and a dramatic reveal at the end.
Students worked incredibly well together, listening and respecting the different views put forward, taking it in turns to film, direct and act, and most importantly, utilizing the skills we discussed together as a class. We had a lovely example of match-on-action editing being used when entering the ‘police station’ and a low angle shot of the suspect being forced into the interview room.
While my A Level Film Studies student, Megan Andreassen finished our workshop with a quick-fire quiz testing our girls on everything they had learnt that morning, I began editing the completed production. DVDs will be in the post this week and I hope all of the girls who attended enjoy watching them back!
