Fashion and Textiles Paris Visit
On Saturday, 12 January a group of Fashion and Textiles students finally visited Paris. Their original trip was planned for Friday, 7 December had to be postponed due to the protests by the Gilet Jaune. There was still a very heavy police presence around the Champs Elysee, which was barricaded off, but very few people in evidence. This was rather surreal and a number of the couturiers were boarded up on the Avenue Montaigne, although Dior and Chanel boutiques were stunning.
However, the key venue for the visit was the Yves Saint Laurent Museum and the exhibition featuring his work inspired by the Orient. This was superb and it was also a thrill to tour the studio of the famous designer and see his books, sketches, one of the famous safari jackets and his iconic glasses on his desk. The students were all inspired by this experience.
The group moved on to research the designers at the famous Printemps and Galeries Lafayette department stores. At the end of the afternoon, we were locked in one of the stores for a very brief period while a small group of protestors were herded down a side street but there was no problem with crowds and the return on the Eurostar was on time.
Thank you to Mr Perry who accompanied Mrs Lloyd and the students on a memorable visit.
