The Reading Room

Invicta home image 7

The English Department would like to welcome you to the new Izatt Building. We are very excited to have taken possession of this brand new block with its own Reading Room. This is housed with a very wide range of reading, including fiction and non-fiction, and is in addition to the main Resource Centre.

We love reading at the school and the girls are very excited to be involved in the new KS3 curriculum, which is focused on reading and teaching through all categories of literature. KS4 and KS5 are also catered for. We are maintaining our focus on the classics and have also infused new titles into the mix; this has been greeted with enthusiasm and excitement from all students.

IGS69

The teachers are also heavily involved in the enjoyment of reading, and this is not just emanating from the English Department. There is a wide variety of literary texts that have a basis in particular subjects and, to inspire students further, we have recently launched book reviews by staff across the whole school.

We believe, and research shows, that a lifelong enjoyment of reading enhances students’ progress in many areas of learning and the sharing of personal reading by teachers is fundamental to success in all subjects. Teachers have been submitting book reviews on texts that are related to their subjects and for different age groups of students. These reviews are on display in the Resource Centre and on Student Portal to encourage and inspire students to read other texts connected with the subjects they are currently studying.

IGS62

Please enjoy the book reviews currently available from staff and students and we look forward to sharing more with you over the coming months. We would also like to share with you the reviews of the current books being read by our extra-curricular Reading Clubs across the age ranges. These reviews have been written by the students who attend and they will be updated on completion of the new selections for the sessions.

Please find links to current reading lists for all Key Stages to help you and your daughter choose a recommended book. As the list of potential good reads changes frequently it would not be possible to update the list continuously. Your daughter can either ask her English teacher or our Resource Manager for any suggestions about literature plus other teachers regarding subject specific texts.

We shall look forward to embracing the love of literature further at Invicta!
